International Retail Audit

A case study with Aesop

The Context

Aesop knew some Melbourne stores consistently outperformed others — and needed to understand why:

  • An international retail audit was underway, with Melbourne stores under the microscope
  • The brief: identify what separates high-performing Aesop stores from those falling short
  • Both standalone and counter formats in scope — spanning retail, airport, and competitor environments

The Challenge

A methodologically demanding brief — precise recruitment, international logistics, and high participant commitment:

  • Each participant required to visit multiple Aesop stores (standalone and counter formats) plus specified competitor stores — high-incentive design to match
  • Recruitment targeted three distinct customer types: Current, Lapsed, and New Aesop users — with specific requirements for Chinese-background participants
  • International airport coverage required flying a team member Auckland–Melbourne to capture the travel retail experience

The Journey

An immersive multi-method program that put real customers inside real stores:

  • Current, Lapsed, and New customers completed in-store visits — recording video impressions, photographing the experience, and logging responses via an online blog in real time
  • An accompanied shop was recruited and added mid-project to capture the Chinese customer perspective in depth
  • In-depth interviews conducted with all respondents to probe and unpack their in-store reactions
  • International airport visit captured in a dedicated mini report

The Results

A rich, evidence-packed evaluation that gave Aesop a clear view of where to invest:

  • Full report with photographic evidence and a separate topline — detailed Aesop vs competitor comparison across all store formats
  • Store-by-store analysis surfaced the key performance differences driving inconsistency across the Melbourne network
  • Concrete recommendations for navigation, consistency, and store experience improvement
  • A social media 'background story' framework outlined — turning retail insight into brand content opportunity
