Effective Strategies For Conducting In-Depth Interviews In Marketing Research

Published 1 January 2024

Any successful business owner knows that their customers are the bread and butter of what they do next. Business owners who invest time and resources in gathering valuable insights from their customers can gain a competitive edge and find themselves in a more strategic position to tailor their offerings to meet consumer demands.

One powerful tool in the marketer’s arsenal for obtaining these insights is a branch of qualitative marketing research: the in-depth interview. These interviews provide an opportunity to unveil niche preferences and hidden motivations and discover unmet needs that quantitative data alone may not reveal. But how do you do it right?

This blog post will outline five effective strategies for conducting in-depth marketing research so that you can extract as much data from your customers to deliver an exceptional product or service every time.

  • Define clear objectives

Before embarking on in-depth interviews, it’s crucial to establish clear research objectives. For instance, if a fitness app is seeking insights for a new feature, the objective might be to understand users’ exercise habits, preferences and pain points. Having well-defined goals ensures that the interviews are focused and that the gathered insights directly contribute to addressing specific business challenges.

  • Build a diverse participant pool

Diversity in your participant pool is key to capturing a broad spectrum of perspectives. Going back to our fitness app example, consider including individuals with varying fitness levels, ages and workout preferences. Consider including people over the age of 50 years as well.  Don’t assume over 50 means they don’t work out. This diversity ensures that the insights obtained represent the app’s user base and help identify common ground and differences that can inspire future product improvements.

  • Ask open-ended questions

Open-ended questions encourage participants to provide detailed and thoughtful responses, offering deeper insights. Using the fitness app example, instead of asking, “Do you use workout reminders?” pose questions like, “Can you describe how you integrate workout reminders into your daily routine?” Also consider using the 5 Ws in your questions.  Who, what, where, when why and of course how to get beyond the rational responses and into storytelling. This in-depth interview approach encourages the respondent to provide more detail-rich answers, giving you a better insight into how they use the app.

  • Incorporate quantitative data wherever possible

Combining qualitative marketing research with quantitative research can provide a well-rounded approach to your research campaign. Alongside in-depth interviews, aim to supplement findings with quantitative surveys, as they can help you identify even more common themes among your customers.

Using the fitness app example, after identifying common themes in interviews regarding preferred workout features, a follow-up survey could quantify the relevance and importance of these preferences among a larger user base and guide prioritisation of feature development.

  • Employ projective techniques

One priceless technique to blend into your qualitative marketing research is giving respondents the space to speak freely — this can be easily achieved using projective interview strategies. Projective techniques are valuable for accessing a participant’s subconscious thoughts and emotions.

For our fitness app example, incorporating techniques like asking users to envision their ideal workout routine or associating feelings with different workout scenarios can reveal underlying motivations and preferences that may not be clear through direct questioning alone.
